The banker deals two cards to himself and two to the remaining players. All cards are dealt face down. The non-banker player with the highest wager represents all the punters. If either the punter representative or the banker has an 8 or a 9, the hands are turned face up and compared. If neither has an 8 or 9, then the player has the option of accepting or refusing another card. If he or she decides to take another card, it is dealt face-up. Customarily the player will accept a card with a hand totalling 0-4 and refuse a card with a hand totalling 6 or 7. The banker then decides whether to accept or refuse a card. After both make their decisions, the cards are turned face-up and compared. If the player's hand is greater than the banker's then each player is refunded his or her bet and the same amount from the bank. The job of banker then is passed on to the next player. If the banker's hand is greather than the player's hand, all wagers go to the bank and the banker's position does not change. In the case of a tie, bets remain the same for the next hand. The banker has the option of withdrawing, and the next player in order becomes the banker if he or she bets an amount equal to the bank's toal. If no one stakes this amont, the next player in order becomes the new banker, and the bank has to reset the amount to that player's bet.
Baccarat is a game of great sophistication and maturity, at least that's the image it portrays. It is a fairly easy game to learn, fun to play, and requires no skill at all; Lady Luck is the principal deciding factor as to whether you win or lose. Baccarat could be considered as the top-of-the-line gambling game that only certain individuals have access to, since the betting requirements are the highest among all casino games. In other words, it's a representation of one's social standing. An interesting fact about the game is that it appears in many movies that involve gambling and rich characters, such as James Bond for instance. Typically, you would see a well-dressed man with a cigar sitting at the baccarat table, accompanied by a beautiful woman; you don't see that at every table and that's why baccarat stands out so much. As popular as it may be among the prosperous, it's not so common among most of the gamblers at a casino; the betting limit is what puts most players out of the league. Not to worry though, there's always mini-baccarat to substitute for the otherwise impossible game.
Several movies and television have featured games of baccarat. In A Hard Days Night, Paul's grandfather pays baccarat at a casino and uses his winnings to pay his bar bill. James Bond plays baccarat in Casino Royale, Thunderball, Dr. No, On Her Majesty's Secret Service, Golden Eye, and For Your Eyes Only. In the 1968 episode of The Saint, "The Exking of Diamonds", Boris tries to win money to buy missiles by playing baccarat. In Rush Hour 3, Carter joins a baccarat table in an attempt to impress genevieve. Unfortunately he does not know the game, and he ends up losing.
